“Pink Is The New Black” is the statement that was carried out in every piece of Missoni’s 2017 Fall Ready to Wear Collection. It has been 20 years since Angela Missoni took leadership over the family fashion house which has managed to remain relevant within the industry for the past 65 years.
Although the women’s marches were not held directly in Milan, the fashion presentation that was held in Missoni’s hometown still attested to the fight for unity. One major takeaway from the show was the finale that featured models parading down the runway wearing pink knit “pussy cat” hats.
Italy’s Monte Rosa or “pink mountain” backdrop was a personal touch that added to the ambiance of the memorable collection. The mountain is the view from her childhood home and the production factory, but in context to the show, it represented femininity and solidity.
Handcrafts and knits are key components that make up the handwriting of the house. One symbolic piece included the tiny red hearts that were knitted across the chest embracing freedom of the nipple and breast. The silhouettes were uncomplicated with mini sweater dresses, ankle-skimming skirts, and structured blazers. The creative director suggests that all fashion houses follow her lead in making a statement and speak out to against issues in the world today.
